Sweeping Generalizations From a Shock Jock

Mike Florio makes his money flapping his lips about football, so, the more flame in his words, the better he appears to be at blowing smoke up our butts. And nothing sells better than flaming a big market franchise. I get it. But, I don’t have to like it.

This hack job against Justin Fields is a sweeping generalization with zero justification other than making noise about…noise! Florio asserts that if Fields does not impress in an obvious rebuild year the fans will all just forget how much we paid for the dude and be ready to say “Oh, well!” and move on.

Get a grip, Florio! First of all, Bears fans are not that stupid, on average, and certainly not re: football. Second, the vast majority of Bears fans were ready to move on from Pace & Nagy at least a year before it happened. Third, and most important, how could anybody see a First Round draft pick get coached off a cliff as a rookie, and think, “Well, the kid has no talent! Forget the draft capital, Pinocchio, lets spend twice as much and get a REAL boy!”

That would be irresponsible, and recklessly so, Mr Florio! If you are subscribing to the idea of the “Not My Guy” syndrome, try to remember that a true franchise QB can raise all boats, IF he, and obviously, the rest of the boats, all get proper coaching. We haven’t seen Justin Fields, nor anyone else on the team with proper coaching. 

How stupidly short sighted would the Bears have to be to not even want to see if a Trubisky-like burst could come from the change? Would you care to rattle off the superstars Trubisky had in 2018? Have you forgotten all the anti-hype? The “No WR1, No TE1, No OL other than Long, so, clearly, no chance” anti-hype leading up to an NFC North crown? 

I haven’t. As it turns out, Nagy had no substance, and never overcame his addiction to overcomplication in the face of desperation. At this point, we have no idea how well Getsy will do, nor how long he will stay; but that’s not a reason to flush the most expensive asset you have left, it’s a reason to bring in a bunch of hungry guys with chips on their shoulders and see how it all shakes out once the foundation is laid.

Sorry you missed the memo Mr Florio, but it takes a whole season to lay a foundation. And I suppose I should cut you some slack, since Sheil Kapadia and his source, with some level of buy in from Dan Bernstein, all seem captivated by this myth that massive change, without an impressive level of splashy, big name, signings, must result in another awful season.

At least Mr Bernstein had the mental chops to posit that you could be perfectly wrong…the new regime might just think Justin Fields is a perfect fit for what they want to do. To that I will add that putting a second year QB in a new system with a roster that requires him to raise all the other boats to have any success at all, could pay amazing dividends next year when they DO have cap space and draft capital.

Try to remember, Mr Florio (and all the “sux 2 b a Bears fan” crowd with you), that sometime a rousing chorus of “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” will fix a whole lot of problems.
